Making Molasses

Wm Luebke Sr. stirs the golden sugar cane juice to keep it from burning as it cooks down into molasses.  Sugar cane was harvested in October and family came to help with the two day event.  The sugar cane was fed into the 1863 model press also used by his father, Henry, and his grandfather.  The 25 gallon juice is cooked and cooked until it becomes 5 gallons of molasses.

William, born in 1907, married Juanita Ritterbusch Sept. 10, 1930.  They had seven children: Marjorie, Harold, Arlene, Ralph, Robert, Carol, Raymond, and William Jr.  The Luebke home was located along Hwy 61-67 next to Harder’s Bakery.
