The Wedding Dresses are Ready!

The wedding and other antique dresses and veils are now ready for your visit!  In addition to the 10 wedding dresses, we’ve also added a flower girl dress from 1910.

We’re now open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for visitors.  We’d love to share these great examples of styles through history with you.  A great exhibit for mother-daughters and father-daughters.

More information about the exhibit is here.

Remember that this is a special exhibit, so we are asking $5 from each visitor, and we’ve added a 50/50 raffle.  $1.00 per ticket, or 6 for $5.00.

More Wedding Dresses!

We’ve acquired a few more dresses for our exhibit.  Check out the photos here, and then stop by the museum to see the beautiful details close up.  Check out how necklines, veils, fabrics, bead work, and lace changed as time moved on.

Wedding Dresses thru the Decades will be featured in the Arnold Room in May.  The oldest dress we have is from 1923, and the newest is from 2010.  The dresses reflect changing styles through the decades, including flapper style, shorter veils, trains and no trains.  A photo of the dress and headpiece during its original ceremony will be displayed with the dress.

May is the month when the museum is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays, from noon to four, so be sure and stop by to visit us.  On Saturdays, we’ll have punch and cookies as well.

“Folding the Flag” Presentation

Flag Folding

Ever wonder how to properly fold the flag, and why the ceremony is the way it is?  On January 7th, Paul Poitras and Rich Hartsook will fold the flag as Rev. Carlton Norton explains what each step signifies.  Afterward, Paul’s brother, Jack, will play Taps.  Consider bringing your kids to teach them the significance of this ritual and our flag.

The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the new museum, at 1723 Jeffco Blvd.  Monthly meeting will follow.  Everyone welcome.

Marvin Roesch and the Vogel relatives

The Vogel relatives

Marvin Roesch, seated second from right, and all of the Vogel relatives on Nov. 4, 2012.

Marvin Roesch, seated second from right, welcomed all of his Vogel relatives to the Arnold Historical Society Museum on Sunday, Nov. 4. Marvin recounted the entire Vogel family genealogy from their home in Baden, Germany in 1852 to arriving in America the second time to stay in 1854. The first boat arrived in New York during a cholera epidemic and the youngest daughter, Francisca, died. So the family return to Baden.

The second time they arrived by steamboat to New Orleans, purchased some land in St. Louis, and finally drove by horse and wagon to Jefferson County where they purchased 100 acres on Old Lemay Ferry Road just west of Maxville. The home they built out of logs still stands today.

Marvin presented a picture of his great-great Grandfather, Charles Karl Vogel, to Bernie Wilde, president of the Arnold Historical Society. The 12X16 picture is held by Terry Roesch. Charles Karl Vogel enlisted in the Union Army and was assigned to the 4th Regiment Missouri Calvary. He mustered out of the Union Army on November 30, 1865 in New Orleans. The event was videotaped and will be available on DVD.
